Egypt tourism increases 9% in first two quarters

Egypt tourism increases 9% in first two quarters

The number of tourists from around the world who visited Egypt during the first five months of 2015 has increased by 9% compared with the same period last year, according to a report by the government’s tourism arm.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism has redoubled its efforts to attract new visitors and to sustain steady growth in tourism since early 2015 and it seems to have paid off.

According to figures from the Ministry, the number of visitors who traveled to Egypt in May 2015 increased by 16.5% from the number of visitors in May 2014.

One of the Ministry’s campaigns was specifically to attract visitors from other Arab countries, particularly Gulf countries. “Masr Qariba” (“Egypt is close”), is the campaign which targets Arab tourists from KSA, UAE and Kuwait.

The number of Emirati tourists is up by 48.3% in 2015 so far, with Kuwaiti tourists up by 48.6%.

In a similar trend, the number of tourists from all over the Arab world who visited Egypt in May 2015 also increased by 23.1% from the number of Arab tourists in May 2014.

The biggest growth market in tourists has been in Saudi Arabian tourists, which has increased by 67.2% in the first five months of 2015.
Sami Mahmoud, chairman of Egypt Tourism Authority, said of the rises: “These positive results reflect that Egypt has fans from all over the world, particularly from our Arab neighbors. The steady increase in Arab tourists demonstrates their trust and belief in Egypt’s ability to provide its visitors with opportunities to enjoy the most beautiful touristic destinations.

Specifically, the ‘Masr Qariba’ campaign will continue to play a key role in attracting tourists and welcome them in their second home, Egypt.”

The Ministry is launching a new global advertising campaign soon, which aims to promote the importance of Egypt’s cultural destinations amongst youth demographics.

By creating tourist packages that combine visits to cultural destinations with opportunities to stay at beach resorts, the campaign hopes to highlight Egypt’s full range of offerings.

Windsurfing Champion Karolina Winkowska to Promote Egyptian Tourism

Windsurfing Champion Karolina Winkowska to Promote Egyptian Tourism

Egypt is partnering with Polish world windsurfing champion Karolina Winkowski to promote Egyptian tourism in Poland and other countries around the world, according to the ONA New Agency.

The chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Promotional Authority, Samy Mahmoud, announced that the authority had signed a contract with the windsurfing champion at a press conference Monday.

The project will included a variety of promotional methods, including Winkowska’s use of windsurfing equipment, professional clothing and cars that bear the Egyptian Tourism Promotional Authority’s logo.

Winkowski will also promote Egypt at windsurfing tour events and the Ford Cup in Poland, in addition to taking advantage of the water sports events that are to be organized in Egypt and shooting promotional videos in different beach tourism destinations in the country.

The collaboration will also involve the production of a promotional film about Egypt on Discovery Channel, as well as organizing promotional trips to Egypt in the Polish market that highlight the country’s potential for windsurfing and other water sports.

Egyptian Tourism Minister Khaled Ramy highlighted the importance of collaborating with celebrities to promote tourism in Egypt. He highlighted the importance of giving more attention to beach tourism in Egypt and the activities that accompany it, as cultural tourism along the Nile Valley especially in Luxor and Aswan has dwindled in the past four years.

This is not the first time for Egypt to collaborate with the Polish athlete to promote beach tourism in Egypt, as the two sides previously collaborated in 2014 when Winkowska shot promotional videos in Egypt’s Red Sea coast.

Government’s charter airline incentives raise hotel occupancies in 4 tourist areas: ETAA members

Government’s charter airline incentives raise hotel occupancies in 4 tourist areas: ETAA members

Abdel Razek Al-Shuwekhi

Decision targets increasing bookings for winter season in Luxor, Aswan, and Taba, and in summer for Marsa Matruh.

Landing and take-off fees imposed on airlines were cancelled at four Egyptian airports, which will increase hotel occupancies in the coming winter season, according to Egyptian Travel Agents Association (ETAA) Chairman Tharwat El-Agamy.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation agreed to cancel the fees at four airports in Egypt for 10 months, according to a release sent to ETAA.

According to the release, the four airports, from which charter airlines benefit thanks to the ministry’s incentive, are the international airports of Luxor, Aswan, Marsa Matruh and Taba.

Agamy said airlines are free to travel from one foreign country to another without transit in the country of the company’s origin. He added that this decision aims at increasing flights to these areas which have suffered a decline in tourism.

He expects a growth in the occupancies of Luxor starting from September. This requires serious preparations for the reservation season, especially concerning Western European countries and East Asia.

Agamy added that the percentage of Luxor’s hotel occupancies in the meantime varies between 15% and 20%.  The decision will be applied, starting from July and until the end of April 2016.

The decision aims to increase reservations during next winter in Luxor, Aswan and Taba, and increase reservations this summer in Marsa Matruh, according to member of the Aviation Committee in the Chamber of Tourism Companies and Agencies, Abdel Hamid Rady.

The Tourism Ministry aims to reconsider incentive programmes of charter by the end of October.

The Ministry of Tourism allocated cash that amounted to $15m annually to avoid changes of planes destinations to countries other than Egypt during the past four years, according to Ramy.

“Charter flights require a reconsideration at the moment, as there is no demand on Egypt,” said Ramy.

The programme cannot continue this way, as fullness rates are weak on regular flights to provide strong incentives for charter, according to Rady. He added that charter flights should only take place if there is high demand on regular flights.

The Ministry of Tourism aims to increase the number of arrivals by the end of this year to 12 million tourists, compared to 9.9 million during 2014, according to the ministry.

Charter incentives throughout the past four years represented the most important incentives provided by Egypt in order to attract tourists amid the disturbances that it suffered from, according to Rady.

According to a Tourism Ministry official, there is a will to increase charter incentives in Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada airports starting from October. This comes in light of the recovery of travel traffic to them compared to the rest of the areas that still experience a decline in tourism.

The ministry does not aim to increase aviation incentives in areas that suffer from a decline, according to the official. The official added that the optimum way of providing incentives will be considered, whether by supporting vacant or filled seats according to each market separately.
